Carried out a survey this week for a customer who had purchased a new table constructed from a newly felled section of timber. All was fine until it was brought home and now literally hundreds of beetles are emerging from the timber.
We identified this as Bark Borer Beetle (Ernobius mollis) which affects timbers containing bark and the outer sap rings of timbers. Such a shame for the client as removing the bark to kill off the infestation is going to take away one of the features why they purchased the table.
In addition to this, an infestation was also noted by what appears to be the Forest Longhorn Beetle which we believe may have also originated from bark on the timber.
